About Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a practice that involves inserting very fine needles into specific points on the body to support health and wellbeing. At Arc, Lyndsey offers a mixture of Both traditional Chinese medicine and Western Acupuncture along with dry needling, all tailored to your individual needs.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on the idea that a vital energy, or qi (pronounced “chee”), flows through the body along pathways called meridians. Health is understood as a balance between two complementary forces, yin and yang — when this balance is disrupted, or qi becomes blocked or depleted, it’s thought to contribute to pain, tension, or illness. Traditional acupuncture aims to restore this balance by inserting fine needles at specific points along the meridians, encouraging the body’s natural healing response.

Western acupuncture (incorporating dry needling) takes a different, more modern approach, rooted in anatomy and neurophysiology rather than energy pathways. It focuses on trigger points — tight, irritable knots within muscle tissue that can cause localised or referred pain. By inserting needles directly into these points, dry needling aims to release muscular tension, improve blood flow, and calm the nervous system’s pain response.

At Arc Acupuncture, Lyndsey draws on both approaches, choosing whichever method — or combination of the two — best suits what you’re experiencing. Many patients benefit from a blend of traditional and Western techniques within the same treatment plan.

Most people are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable acupuncture is. The needles used are extremely fine — much thinner than a standard injection needle — and many people feel little more than a mild sensation as they’re inserted. Some people experience a slight ache or tingling around the needle, which is completely normal and usually settles quickly.

This varies from person to person depending on your condition, how long you’ve been experiencing it, and how your body responds to treatment. Lyndsey will discuss a recommended treatment plan with you at your initial consultation, and will review your progress as you go.

Your initial consultation is longer than follow-up sessions, as Lyndsey will take a full health history and discuss your goals. Follow-up treatments are typically shorter. Exact session lengths will be confirmed at the time of booking.

Yes — when carried out by a qualified and registered practitioner, acupuncture is very safe. Lyndsey is registered with the Acupuncture Regulatory Authority (ARA) and adheres to strict hygiene and safety standards. All needles used are single-use and sterile.

If you’re pregnant, it’s important to let Lyndsey know before your appointment. Acupuncture can be safely used throughout pregnancy, but as a precaution, treatment is best commenced after the first trimester. Given her background as a Qualified Midwife, Lyndsey is well placed to advise on safe and appropriate care at every stage.

About Lyndsey's Practice

What conditions do you treat?

Lyndsey has a particular specialist interest in women’s health and perinatal mental health, and treats a wide range of conditions including menopause, fertility, pregnancy-related discomfort, gynaecological conditions including endometriosis, but can also treat pain relief, sports injuries, sciatica, and general wellbeing.

Your first appointment begins with a thorough consultation. Before treatment, you’ll be asked to complete a short screening questionnaire and consent form — either in advance via a secure link sent with your booking confirmation, or on arrival if you haven’t had a chance beforehand. This helps Lyndsey understand your health history and ensures your treatment is both safe and fully informed.

Lyndsey will then take a detailed health history, discuss your symptoms and goals, and explain how acupuncture may help you. Treatment will then begin, tailored specifically to your needs. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
